The staple clumping palm of Kailua Kona, the Areca palm.  Easily identified by the classic palm fronds that adorn its crown paired with multiple stems coming from a ground level clump. This palm is a fan favorite due to its versatility. Do you want tall, airy palms? Thin out the young stems as the tree grows, exposing the trunks. Do you want privacy? Leave the majority of the keikis intact and the cluster will grow thickly together. Are you concerned about height? Cut any trees that reach your height limit, the lower growth will replace them. The Areca palm is very happy in the lower elevations on the Big Island of Hawaii, favoring our zone 10 and zone 11 growth regions. This palm is a little needier than others though. Maintenance of the palm includes clearing out the keiki to keep things tidy, removing dead fronds, and cutting seed pods. Additionally the Areca Palm is hungry and thirsty, feed it 3 times a year with palm food and water frequently (just don’t keep soggy). With a little work this palm can fill in any missing niche in your landscaping.

love how flexible these are, you can really shape them to fit the space whether you want open trunks or a full privacy screen.
